Feb. 15

Time spent: 4 hours
Total time: 6 hours
Actions: Today I visited Jon's workplace. He showed me the tools of the trade, including his Cintiq. Apparently he does live caricatures with it by hooking it up to larger screens, meaning he swiftly draws his customers in front of an audience, usually companies. I learned a lot about him, i.e. he likes cats. He has some experience with web design, explaining why his fancy website is so well put together. I brought my cheap Intuos in order to learn how to use software (Corel, Photoshop) but unfortunately, I forgot my pen at his house so I couldn't practice at home! Thankfully he let me have a Copic sketch marker, which I've been eying for some time, so I was more than overjoyed to finally hold one for the first time. Copics really are a cut above the rest.
Next action: I will study the two caricaturing books he let me borrow, then utilize the Copic to make traditional sketches.
How am I doing?: I need to contact my volunteer place. Everyone keeps rejecting me because I am so young and an amateur :/

Feb. 9

Time spent: 2 hours
Total time: 2 hours
Actions: I met Jon today at a coffee shop in the Mission (after a while of being lost). He is around thirty but he seems like he's around my age; I was so nervous and jittery for no good reason! He's really friendly and easy to talk to, but his schedule is quite full, so I have to schedule our meeting dates at least a week in advance through email or by calling him. I learned a lot about him: On top of caricatures, from which he makes most of his income, he does illustrations and paintings, which are equally amazing but less in-demand. He's from the east coast, and he tries to refrain from speaking like a Bay Area native in order to keep that "professional" aura, which I know can prove quite difficult for artists and free spirits.
Next action: I'm meeting him again after Valentine's Day at his workplace, which is also a BART ride away in the Mission.
How am I doing?: I've got an early start. I'm hoping this project runs smoothly!
